Flashback Friday - My First Brush with AI: Eliza on the TRS-80

Way back in 1980 (45 years ago), my very first tango with anything resembling artificial intelligence was a quirky little program called Eliza. It chugged along on my trusty TRS-80, and let me tell you, it felt like pure magic at the time.

Fast-forward to today: I got hit with a wave of nostalgia (cue the cheesy synth music) and embarked on a mini digital archaeology adventure. Lo and behold, I unearthed the original source code! It was hiding in plain sight in this timeless classic, BASIC Computer Games Volume II, published by Radio Shack that very same year.

I know some of you fellow old-timers might be reading this with that glassy-eyed, glazed-over look (yeah, you know the one—been there, done that, got the punch cards). But even if you're not a retro enthusiast, there's something undeniably enchanting about peeking into the past.

It highlights just how far we've come in the world of AI... and yet, how some fundamentals never really change. (The wild part? It probably wouldn't take much to port this gem over to LotusScript.)

Enjoy
