File fragmentation IS an issue on a SAN

In your best Top Gear voice:

"Some say that SANs are immune from file fragmentation - and that it just doesn't matter. Others say that they automatically cater for it - and that's why they are expensive"

All we know is that they're wrong !!!

If Windows is spending time handling and issuing split I/Os chasing different parts of a file, it's not performing optimally. These requests take time and it adds up.

We have evidence proving the benefits of defragmentation but If you think we're wrong and can explain why, with a before/after comparison showing no improvement on a SAN, we'd love to hear it.

Better still why not see for yourself and try Defrag.NSF, it's that easy!

So what's in a DAOS NLO file name ?

Here is an example DAOS NLO file name:

A31EBC22B37766C61D8A74AF4546EECDAF3226120015E3E6.nlo

It appears to have two components, the first 40 characters are the file's SHA1 hash, and the next 8 characters are its file size.

This is very similar to how we store messages in the Preemptive Email Vault. The same file in it would be

A31EBC22B37766C61D8A74AF4546EECDAF322612.jpg

Again it is the SHA1 hash of the file, but in our case we also leave the extension.

IBM, it's time to talk to the NZ Education Review Office

I came across the following tender information today:

"The NZ Education Review Office is calling for expressions of interest from suitable ICT providers to replace its current Lotus Notes email system with Microsoft Exchange 2007. Existing mail databases must be migrated to Exchange, and remote access to Exchange must also be provided (GETS Reference: 24972)."

More information at the www.getz.govt.nz

64bit version of Defrag.NSF now available

Same great product supporting Windows 2003 in its 64 bit form.

If you like DAOS, you'll love The Preemptive Email Vault

DAOS brings about fantastic disk savings by storing attachments once on a Domino server. IBM uses a digital signature of an attachment and writes attachments to a file system. The Preemptive Email Vault works exactly the same way.

However, since we have had this fantastic feature for over four years, we have slightly different requirements and additional features:

  • The Preemptive Email Vault does not require Domino 8.5 and its new ODS.
  • We only ever stores a SINGLE copy of the attachment for all the servers in the Domain. This takes storage savings to another level. There is only one copy of an attachment irrespective of the number of servers in your Domain.
  • It allows Administrators to thumbnail images (this makes it very easy to track down inappropriate material) See demo click here
  • Attachments are stored in their native format and can be indexed and referenced accordingly.
  • We provide a drag/drop search feature to find out who sent an attachment and to where. This single feature could save your organisation a fortune in a search and discovery exercise.
  • We provide a generic SQL interface so administrators can develop queries and reports to mine this valuable information.

Additionally the Preemptive Email Vault stores your email in a timeless and easy to access way. It helps with compliance issues and allows customers to remove quotas and let their staff get on with the business they are running.
